My name is Angelo Martinez, I am a promising 16-year-old Hispanic golfer from Albuquerque, New Mexico. I began golfing when I was 8 years old, and it didn’t take long for me to fall in love with the game. I was soon winning competitive tournaments across my home State of New Mexico. At the age of 14 years old, I was nominated by the Notah Begay Foundation to receive an advanced Scholarship to attend high school and to further develop my golf skills at The Golf Performance Academy in Ridgefield, Connecticut. This opportunity was offered to me because of my passion for the game and my work ethic, both of which was seen by many at an early age. This opportunity would give me access to some of the best golf coaches, mental coaches, and physical coaches that I otherwise would not have access to. It was a tough decision for me to leave my home, family and friends. I knew I had to make the sacrifice if I wanted to achieve my goal of becoming the best golfer in the world one day.
My family currently lives in the South Valley area of Albuquerque, where my dad works as a service technician for the local natural gas company and my mom is an elementary school teacher. My dad and mom have worked very hard to provide my little sister and I with great opportunities. They have been able to afford opportunities such as great private schooling and the opportunity to chase my dream on the other side of the country. They have provided me with some of the best golf equipment and have found a way to fund all my travel and golf tournaments up to this point. I do not take their hard work and the opportunities they have given me for granted. I know how hard my parents work to provide these opportunities for my little sister and me.
I am now 16 years old and in my Junior year of High School at The Golf Performance Academy. I have been working hard and have accomplished many achievements in the last 2.5 years. I just recently represented the USA in my first international AJGA golf tournament in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I was able to secure a first-place win with a -10 after three days of competitive golf. I competed amongst 130 competitors from six international countries. I have over 50 competitive tournament wins over the course of the last 8 years, with a low handicap Index of +4.9. I have been working hard on my craft and in the classroom, maintaining a 3.85 GPA taking honors and AP courses. My dedication and hard work have earned me new opportunities to play in tournaments against some of the best junior golfers and amateurs in the world. This means more travel not only within the U.S. but also internationally.
There is a quote that I have always admired by Tim Notke that says, "Hard work beats talent, when talent doesn’t work hard." This quote has helped inspire my work ethic and will continue to inspire me on my journey. It has inspired me to keep working hard even when it’s difficult to do. I believe that God given talent can only get you so far. I believe that great golfers are made with hard work and the support of the people that are around them. I have much more to accomplish in my future and your support would be instrumental in helping me reach my full potential and my personal goal of becoming one of the greatest professional golfers in the world.
To make my goal and dreams come to full realization I need to continue to seek resources to support my journey. I am being recruited by many colleges from all over the Country and the tournament schedule allows coaches to see me play in competitive tournaments. My family has used many resources to help me reach this point. I have reached a new level of success, and it is going to take much more to help me reach my full potential. Sponsorships would cover essential expenses such as tournament fees, travel, hotel, coach fees, and equipment.
Any sponsorship funds contributed will be placed in the Julia and Frank M. Sanchez Family Foundation with full accountability. Dr. Frank Sanchez and the Sanchez family will assume complete oversight and distribution of the funds generated by sponsorships.
